Niamh O'Brien
Niamh is a research officer in the Faculty of Health and Social Care at Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford, Essex, UK. She has been employed by the university for 3 years. During her time here she has completed working as lead researcher on a large scale participatory research project commissioned by Children’s Fund Essex. This project involved the participation of children and young people as co-researchers. The young researchers were involved in collecting data from their peers across the county of Essex, presenting their findings at conferences and producing their own research report. They were instrumental in recruiting the new Participation Development Officer for Essex and the Children’s Fund Project manager for the county. They were also awarded City and Guilds certificates of achievement for the work they had carried out.

Niamh is currently working as part of a team investigating the needs of young carers for a Local Authority in England. Young carers are being consulted via interviews and focus groups. Creative methods are being used to collect the views of those who do not want to be involved in the interviews and focus groups. Adult professional are also involved in this research through telephone and face to face interviews.

Niamh has presented at various conferences and has facilitated workshops for adult professionals. She has also co-facilitated a training day for professionals who have a lead in participation with the idea to introduce and promote the use of Hear By Right “a tried and tested standards framework for organisations across the statutory and voluntary sectors to assess and improve practice and policy on the active involvement of children and young people”.

Her Msc dissertation uses Systematic Review methodology and asks whether secondary school pupils’ definition of bullying is the same or different from teachers.
